Module 3: Postural Supports: Seat Cushions, Back Supports & Other Interventions

Abstract

This module covers, the postural supports including seat cushions, back supports, and other components that comprise a seating system. Classifications of devices are discussed based on material properties and functional purpose. The etiology and stages of pressure sores are discussed. The purpose and application of pressure mapping is described.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module the learner will be able to;

    1. Describe the 7 catagories of seat and back supports
    2. List 4 internal or external factors that contribute the development of a pressure ulcer
    3. Describe the 4 stages of pressure sores
    4. Explain 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of foam andviscous fluid as a seating material
    5. Explain 2 purposes of pressure mapping devices
