Module 8: Wheelchair Transportation Safety: Ride Safe
Presenter: Mary Ellen Buning, PhD, OTR/L, ATP
Overview:
This module is taken from a previous presentation by Mary Ellen Buning who is a subject matter expert in the area of wheelchair transportation. Rather than recreating a similar lecture, it was taken from the RSTCE webinar offerings.
Description:
This presentation covers the basic principles of wheelchair transportation safety. The 40-minute talk covers the topics of wheelchair securement with 4-point strap type tiedowns and docking systems, effective occupant restraint, and wheelchairs that meet the WC19 safety standard for use as a seat in a motor vehicle (WC19-compliant wheelchairs). It also presents how to use best practices when working with a non-WC19 compliant wheelchair. The presentation concludes with a video series of 30mph/20g sled tests that depicts misuse and proper use of wheelchair securement, occupant restraint and the use of WC19-compliant wheelchairs for children and adults.
Learning objectives:
Upon attending this seminar:
- Participants will be familiar with the characteristics of the “right equipment” for improved safety for those who ride in vehicles while seated in a wheelchair.
- Participants will understand the contribution of voluntary safety standards when choosing equipment for wheelchair securement, occupant restraint and mobility devices.
- Participant will have access to additional resources for learning more about wheelchair transportation safety.
