Michael C. Munin, MD

Dr. Michael Munin is a board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as electrodiagnostic medicine. He is an associate professor and Vice Chairman in the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Munin also holds a secondary appointment within the department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology. He has been honored with listings in both America's Top Doctors (Castle Connlley Guide) and Best Doctors in America since 2001 and 2004 respectively. He is also medical director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and outpatient Spasticity and Prosthetic Clinics.

Description:

Spastic hypertonia is an important clinical problem after brain and spinal cord injury or disease. In this lecture, current concepts regarding mechanisms of disease and clinical presentation from this condition will be discussed. Rehabilitation and medical treatments, including local injections with botulinum toxin, will be demonstrated. After viewing this presentation, the listener should have a solid understanding of available treatment options to help patients with this condition lessen disability from spasticity.

Learning objectives:

Upon attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • identify upper and lower limb spasticity patterns;
  • describe treatment goals of spasticity management
  • describe advantages and disadvantages to occupational therapy, physical therapy and pharmacological spasticity treatments;
  • determine when spasticity management should be introduced into the rehabilitation protocol;
  • identify multimodal approaches to spasticity management, which can include: rehabilitation, oral medication, intrathecal baclofen, chemodenervation, Orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery;
  • determine when a team approach for spasticity management should be implemented.
